Your Instant Avatar is a digital copy of you. Once you create your avatar on Heygen, you don't need to get on camera again! Just write the script, and your avatar will deliver it as if it were you. The process to create an avatar takes about 5 minutes. 

 Your subscription tier determines how many avatars you can create.

First you can choose between a Still and Motion avatars. Each avatar fits a different use case:

If this is the very first avatar you're creating, it's best to start with a Still avatar. 

Now you can choose between video instructions and text instructions on best practices to create your avatar. We've attached it for you as well:

Important note- Please make sure to NOT use HDR in your footage - 

When producing avatars, we do not support HDR (High Dynamic Range) input files because they can create inconsistencies in color grading. HDR can significantly alter the appearance of colors, particularly skin tones. This leads to a mismatch between the real footage and the generated avatar, resulting in an unnatural and inconsistent look. To ensure the best quality and most accurate representation, please avoid enabling HDR when recording your videos."

When your recording your avatar footage, it's important you make sure the sound quality is high as well. 

Choose a topic that makes you comfortable and helps you focus on the camera. Here are some examples:

Now for the most important part - your footage!

 You can use your webcam on your computer to record your avatar footage or upload a higher quality video from your phone/camera. 

: High-resolution cameras (even smartphones) produce better avatars than laptop webcams.

: If your footage is 4K you can choose to keep that quality.

if you'd like to change backgrounds in the future (Only for Still Avatar). 

You can upload your footage as a file or provide a GoogleDrive link. 

To make sure we follow AI safety protocols, we require our users to record a short consent video to make sure the avatar is created for the person who agrees to it. 

The video should include our consent text, and be no longer than 30 seconds, with clear lighting and sound, and should be as similar to the avatar footage as possible.

 Upload your consent video file or share the Google Drive link with us.

 Film the consent video live using your laptop's webcam.

 Film the consent video live using your smartphone.

 The consent video must feature the same person as the avatar footage.

 Do not submit a recording of a screen playing the consent statement.

 Ensure the video is well-lit and the sound is clear. Videos that are too dark or have poor audio will not be accepted.

If your video includes a code, please make sure you read the code loud and clear to avoid errors. 

Once your avatar is completed, you can sign up for one of our plans to get credits and start making videos with your Heygen Avatar!  

No worries! Paid users can have up to 5 redos of their avatars per month. Deleting your avatar counts as a redo.

 Redos renew each month when your subscription renews.

 Your avatar will reflect exactly what you put into it. If you cough, move your body in a certain way, or if your voice is robotic, echoey or at an unusual pitch, these traits will appear in your avatar. Make sure your original footage is as clean and accurate as possible to get the best results.

Is there a limit to the number of outfit avatars that can be generated?

You can input any keywords to change the clothing, but please note that only 10 sets of clothes can be saved as outfit Avatars.

This means that you can generate unlimited outfits for use, but you can only store up to

When creating your Still avatar, we offer two options to record your footage:

Upload a Google Drive or local video file

Please keep in mind that uploading your footage from a higher quality camera is the better option to create a higher quality avatar. 

 Use professional cameras for the best results. Mobile phones or webcams can also work.

 Choose a quiet space with good lighting.

 Record at least one 2-minute long uninterrupted speech.

 We recommend filming in 1080p for higher avatar quality. 4K at 60FPS is even better.

 Do not edit or cut the footage in the middle. It should be a continuous shot.

 Stand still and avoid sudden head motions or unnatural body movements. Be natural and calm. Your avatar will perform exactly as you do.

 Maintain direct eye contact with the camera at all times. Avoid looking around or up and down during the recording.

 Keep hand movements below chest level and avoid raising them above your chest.

 Take pauses with lips closed between sentences and look at the camera.

2-3 second pause at the start of the video.

1-2 second pause in the middle between long sentences.

 Use 4K for the best quality. Turn on your camera/ smartphone’s “

 Keep your head centered in the frame at all times. 

 Use soft, even lighting to avoid shadows. Natural light or softbox lights work best.

: Keep your face visible at all times. Do not cover your mouth with your hands or any objects.

: Try and keep a front-facing angle. You can slightly turn your head up to 30 degrees, but front-facing is recommended.

: Avoid shaking the camera. Use a tripod or stabilize your phone to ensure a steady shot.

 Speak naturally and clearly. Make sure your lips are visible.

 Feel free to sit, stand, or walk, but keep your face in the frame and well-lit.

 Use a variety of facial expressions to give the AI more data to work with.

 Clear audio is crucial. Use a Bluetooth mic for better voice quality.

 Wear solid colors to avoid distractions. Try and avoid patterns that can cause visual noise.

 Choose a quiet space with consistent lighting.

 Avoid quick movements to keep the footage clear.

 Steer clear of backlighting or harsh shadows.

 Keep the camera level with your face – don’t tilt it excessively.

Using Shutter Encoder to Convert WebM for Adobe Premiere

To convert a WebM file for use in After Effects (AE), follow the four steps below:

: Open Shutter Encoder and import the WebM file downloaded from HeyGen.

 as the encoder setting. This format is necessary because WebM files can’t be directly used in Adobe PR. The webm file needs to be converted to ProRes first to preserve the alpha channel.

For safety and compliant purpose, when creating an Instant Avatar or Personalized Video, HeyGen requires you to record a consent video with specific instruction to authorize HeyGen to build the avatar for your HeyGen account.

We recommend you to use your webcam to record an authentic consent video for the best experience.

If you need to upload consent videos recorded by someone else, please talk to our enterprise team where you can have such use case and terms arranged based on your use case.
