How to turn off the water supply to the toilet

Last updated August 7, 2023

If you're facing issues such as a leaky toilet, continuous running of water in the toilet, or if you're planning to replace your old toilet with a new one, you'll need to turn off the water supply. Here's a straightforward guide to help you achieve this:

Steps:

  1. Locate the Plumbing Line:
  • Start by locating the plumbing line to your toilet. This line could either emerge from the ground or protrude from the wall. Ensure it's the right line by tracing it to the connection point at the toilet tank.
  1. Identify the Knob:
  • On this plumbing line, you will spot a knob. This knob will be positioned between the line coming from the ground/wall and the one leading to the toilet tank.
  1. Turn Off the Supply:
  • To halt the water supply:
  • Reach for the knob.
  • Rotate it clockwise until it doesn't turn any further.
  1. To Restore Water Supply:
  • When you wish to resume the water supply, simply:
  • Approach the same knob.
  • Turn it counterclockwise.
  1. In Case of a Faulty Valve:
  • If, after turning the knob, water continues to flow to the toilet (indicative of a faulty valve):
  • Locate the main water line of your house. This could typically be found in areas like your basement.
  • Identify the knob on the main line.
  • Rotate this knob clockwise. This action will cease the water flow to all pipes in your house, including the one leading to the toilet.

Summary:

Turning off the water supply to your toilet is a simple task. Firstly, identify the correct plumbing line connected to your toilet and then turn the knob clockwise. In the event of a malfunctioning valve, resort to shutting off the house's main water supply. Always remember to turn counterclockwise to resume water supply.
