Troubleshooting Steps:
- Check for Noise:
- Turn on your garbage disposal. If you hear no noise, it could be a power issue.
- Reset Button:
- Overheating can trip the reset button.
- Locate the reset button (typically either underneath or on the side of the unit, depending on the manufacturer).
- Press the reset button.
- Try flipping the disposal switch again.
- Check Power Source:
- If it still doesn’t work, ensure the outlet has power. Plug in a small appliance or radio to test.
- If there's no power, inspect the circuit breaker and ensure it’s operational. Restore power if needed.
- Identify Buzzing or Humming:
- A buzzing or humming noise indicates a jam.
- If you hear this noise, the next step is to clear the jam.
Clearing a Jam:
- Understand the Underneath:
- The reset button is typically located under the unit.
- In the center, there’s a spot for a wrench to unjam the unit.
- Use the Disposal Wrench:
- Some disposals come with a special wrench (often S-shaped). Insert it into the center and jiggle back and forth to free the jam.
- If you've misplaced this wrench, a standard Allen wrench of the same shape can suffice.
- Alternative Method:
- If you don't have a wrench, you can use a broomstick through the sink opening. Attempt to engage one of the disposal's teeth and gently push to free the jam.
- Caution: Thin stainless steel sinks might bend under pressure. Avoid applying too much force to prevent damage.
- Dealing with Tougher Jams:
- Some items, like broken glass or coins, can cause severe jams. These might not be cleared with the above methods.
- If this occurs, you may need to detach the disposal from the sink and manually remove the obstructing item.
