How to change your indoor air filter

Last updated August 7, 2023

Indoor air filters are essential for maintaining the air quality in your home and ensuring your heating system functions optimally. As the seasons change, it's crucial to inspect and replace these filters. Scott Lancer from Emerson Climate Technologies provides a step-by-step guide on how to change your indoor air filter effectively.

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Locate the Filter:
  • To change the air filter, start by locating it. Most often, it's positioned where the air returns from the room, moves across the furnace burners (which heat the air), and is then sent back to the room.
  • Typically, your filter is found between the return plenum and the main furnace system. Look for it near the blower motor housing.
  1. Turn Off the Unit:
  • Before changing the filter, ensure your furnace is turned off. Locate the switch on or near the furnace unit and turn it off.
  1. Remove the Filter Cover:
  • Take off the cover that houses the filter to access the air filter.
  1. Slide Out the Old Filter:
  • Gently pull the filter out of its chamber. Scott recommends placing a small piece of duct tape on the end of the filter. This "handle" makes the filter easier to remove when changing it later.
  1. Note Important Details:
  • On the removed filter, observe the size indicated (usually marked on the frame). This information is crucial when purchasing a replacement.
  • Also, look for an arrow indicating airflow direction. Remember this direction to correctly place the new filter.
  1. Install the New Filter:
  • Check the size and make sure it matches your previous filter.
  • Ensure the airflow direction arrow on the new filter matches the direction of the old filter.
  • Slide the new filter into place. Ensure it fits snugly without forcing it.
  1. Seal the Filter Cover:
  • Put the filter cover door back on.
  • Scott suggests using a few strips of duct tape to seal this enclosure, ensuring no conditioned air leaks into unconditioned spaces.
  1. Turn the Unit Back On:
  • Don't forget to flip the furnace switch back to the "ON" position. This action ensures your furnace will work when you next need heat.
